Lobban Bentomiz Brut | Cataluyna, Spain

£16.10

This beautiful sparkling Penedes is blessed with a touch of Andalusia through the collaboration between Lobban Wines in Barcelona and Bodegas Bentomiz in Malaga.

A base wine of Penedés grapes – 45% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeo and 15% Parellada – made using the ‘Metodo Tradicional’ – the Traditional or Champagne Method. There is a second fermentation ‘en rima’ (stored in a horizontal position) for a minimum of 36 months. Then the bottles are placed in racks facing downwards that are turned regularly.

After the disgorging of the lees, the liquid lost during the operation is replaced with “licor de expedición”. Rather than a combination of wine and sugar, winemaker Pamela Geddes uses the sweet dessert wine from Bentomiz –Ariyanas Naturalmente Dulce – giving a special character. The dosage is <3g litre.

The winemaking process is entirely manual, using traditional method artisanal techniques; this is a truly handcrafted wine.

Recommended – 86 points: Decanter Premium Spanish Sparkling Wines, August 2024.
